Why Kosher Wines at Domaine de Coste Chaude
With the cuvée L’Octave, I paid tribute to my grandfather Octave MOUREN. I also wanted to highlight my other grandfather, Elie TRAMIER, who was the first to show me how to make wine when I was a child. A lawyer in Avignon and elected bâtonnier in November 1938, he remained in that position until the end of World War II. Despite his first name, which was common in Provence in the late 19th and early 20th centuries without any religious connotation, he was not Jewish. During the German occupation, he defended his Jewish colleagues and friends from the Avignon Bar and notably helped some of them leave France.
A former Colonel of the Senegalese Tirailleurs and a member of the Resistance, he notably hid weapons for a group of Freemason resistance fighters in his house in Avignon, although to my knowledge, he was not a member of any lodge.
So, when Jewish friends asked me to create a kosher wine cuvée, I took up the challenge with the intention of producing high-quality organic and kosher wines.
To ensure the quality of my wines while guaranteeing strict adherence to kashrut for my future consumers, I turned to Rabbi Rav Haï Amram, Dayan in Marseille, and Rabbi Joseph BENHAMOU for certification by the OU (Orthodox Union). Both are specialized in kosher wine certification, supported by experienced teams of Chomers (Rabbinical Supervisors).
Thus, in 2020, the kosher cuvées Le Pessah were created: La Source d’Elie (in homage to my grandfather) and La Source de l’Argentier (named after the stream that originates on the estate). They were noted by Mr. David Raccah in his blog **Kosher Wine Musings**, by the newspaper **Le Monde** in its selection of Côtes du Rhône in “Le Monde des vins” among non-kosher wines, and they were awarded medals at the **Decanter World Wine Awards** and the **Gilbert & Gaillard International Wine Competition**.
