THE VISAN PLATEAU
Our terroir
Domaine de Coste Chaude is located at 360m high, on top of the hill behind the Eastside of Visan village. Our 37 hectares of lands are divided into 14 hectares of forest and former truffle trees, and 23 hectares of vines, planted on the hillsides, with a perfect South orientation:
- This orientation allows the grapes to perfectly mature.
- With this altitude, we have 3°C less than in lowlands, which provides a natural freshness to our wines. Furthermore, we benefit of an almost constant breeze, which protects our vines from fungal diseases and spring frosts and gives us fresh nights. All these elements, with a Mediterranean climate, guarantee the production of both healthy and balanced grapes.
Our soil is mostly covered with limestones gravels and pebbles, mixed with ocher, yellow and brown clays, which are old river deposits from the Miocene period. This very qualitative soil is considered as “one of the most valuable terroirs of Visan” by George TRUC, renowned oenologist and geologist in our region.
All these assets were already known by the elders, which explains why the land registry shows that vines had already been planted in the “Coste Chaude” area in 1582.
